Ujima Men's Collective

For my first internship, I served as a social media intern at Ujima Men’s Collective. The non-profit’s mission is to grow a collective of Black same gender loving men who will educate, inform, encourage, and advocate for themselves and the greater community. My close friend and mentor, Travis Dozier is a long-standing member who helped me earn this internship. I explored social media and graphic design for the first time, using platforms such as Canva and Instagram.

During Ujima’s 20th Anniversary Conference, I directed public relations by conducting interviews, providing photography and videography, and supporting an overall positive event experience for guests. It was a pleasure to meet and befriend people of different races, ethnicities, and gender and sexual identities.

Right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I was diligently applying to summer internships. All prospects failed due to the quarantine, but Archstone Capital Inc. quickly adapted to virtual work and opened a spot for me on their team. My internship focused on one of the private equity firm’s newly acquired businesses: SoBe Vegan, a South Beach restaurant that provides healthy vegan food in a fun and vibrant atmosphere. Here I gained a thorough understanding of social media best practices, such as consistent tone and voice, hashtag usage, and feed variation. I also developed the foundation for two projects: community outreach to elementary schools and sports nutrition with gym partners.

In April 2020, I was invited to apply to the DT Emerge event, which is a networking event for
Dell Technologies and students from historically Black and Hispanic serving institutions. I thought, “I’m not STEM. Did they make a mistake?”, but I took a chance anyway and applied. This turned out to be the most significant decision I have ever made for my future career search. After networking with DT team members for three months, I earned a summer 2021 marketing internship in Partner Management. In this role, I ensured all members of the Global Alliance Team had timely access to team communication and informational resources. This was often a challenge because my team comprised more than thirty people across all three global regions: The Americas, EMEA (i.e., Europe, Middle East and Africa), and APJC (i.e., Asia, Pacific, Japan and China). One of my favorite R&Rs (i.e., Roles & Responsibilities) was taking care of my Intel sweetie pies, who are incredibly kind and thoughtful team members from our largest partner. At the end of my internship, I presented our hard work to the vice president of Marketing Strategy & Operations. In September 2021, I accepted my first full-time career as a marketing analyst in DT’s Marketing Development Program.

Thank you, Dell Technologies, for welcoming me to the Dell familia.
